Trash Series
While biking in Honolulu, I would pass these immaculate piles of trash. Televisions, toilets, mattresses, furniture…. basically a plethora of crap. The more I passed these piles, the more I experienced their presence: the more I began to notice and recognize compositional qualities in the pile itself. With stacked, grid-like forms and a dominant physical presence, these seemingly irrelevant stacks of waste manifested into an installation within themselves.
With this series, I photographed a wasteland of trash outside of an apartment close to where I was living in Makiki (Moilili). Then I painted directly on top of the 3×5 35MM photograph, cut it into 5 sections, and enlarged the forms.
